About Us
The Education Law Group is a team of lawyers and staff dedicated to the practice of education law. The Group represents a significant number of public school boards, as well as private schools and private institutions of higher education. The Group is part of Timberlake Smith Thomas & Moses, PC, a law firm that has served public and private sector clients for over a half-century from its location in historic downtown Staunton - the heart of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, birthplace of Woodrow Wilson, and home to Mary Baldwin College and the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library.
Educational institutions face a wide range of increasingly complex legal challenges and regulatory requirements. Never before have school leaders and school boards confronted as many legal minefields as at present. The Education Law Group attorneys are devoted to education law and provide clients with the legal experience needed to direct their institutions while managing legal risk. The Group serves the wide range of client needs through an uncompromising approach to protect client interests and prerogative to make decisions with confidence. Our counsel is prompt—recognizing the time-sensitivity of client needs. Our advice and solutions are practical, understanding of the school environment and operations. Importantly, our commitment to client relationships is reinforced by a shared passion for the noble work of educators and the goals of education. Our lawyers focus on the substantive specialties in school law, including employment/human resource issues, teacher issues, student discipline, special education, construction, public procurement, FOIA, constitutional issues, and governance. Our lawyers also have a well-established track record of successfully defending client interests in litigation, backed by a law firm of lawyers who are recognized as outstanding by peers.
The Education Law Group lawyers have represented as general or special counsel more than 30 school boards and numerous other educational institutions and leaders throughout Virginia. In addition to responding to pressing legal needs, we help keep our clients current on legal issues and court decisions. Clients are updated through presentations and briefings, seminars, and our web site. Our lawyers regularly speak at statewide and regional education law conferences and are active in education law professional organizations. They also write on education topics.
